Stress

Dernière mise à jour : 5 déc. 2020

Each day we hear about stress. But can we really define it?

From a few definitions we learn about the meaning of “stress”:

- “One of bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter an existent equilibrium »

- “A force exerted when one body or body part presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part.”

- If we look at the physics meaning we find that it stands for “a force that acts in a way that often changes the shape of an object”.

With such ideas we clearly see that stress means variations regarding a certain shape (state). It leads to emotional reactions resulting in instability that has to be outweighed by adaptations.

In fact, boundless stress is harmful and damaging for our health, as it can:

- prematurely make you die,

- reduce your cognitive capacities and mental health,

- decrease energy expenditure and increase appetite (G Oliver & J Wardle 1999),

- reduce nutrients’ absorption,

- reduce muscular growth and recovery processes,

- increase the risks of injury,

- escalate disease, immune functions and general pathological conditions

- …

I would like to quote Mr Lou Holtz who is used to say

“Life is 10 percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.”

Well, with stress this is the same idea. This is all about what we live and we deal with it. We all live stressful situations but we don’t manage them the same way. We all give different responses to stress.

By the way, an adapted nutrition (this is one part of the answer) can lead to better reactions to stress. Indeed, first when you are living stressful periods, you can prepare healthy snacks in order to reduce the effect of appetite rises and so the potential weight gains. Then, having the great an adapted amount of food and nturients can also lead to a better stress management: with an enough amount of available energy, we are more disposed to face these states.

On a more global scale, the idea is to set-up a good (and healthy) environnement by trying to avoid useless stress but also to get prepared with the best weapons to fight it: manage people, work conditions, financial situations... etc.
