What is detox ?
- For some this is kind of purification process.
- For others, this is a way to punish oneself for a bad behaviour. This is pretty common to see an increase of that trend, after Christmas and New Year period for example. We tend to regret our behavior during the holidays and we end up by whipping ourselves, with the consequence of buying this “Exceptionnal dit that will help you loose 5kg in one week by cleaning the whole body, and make you feel more than alive”, or that “New tea that will help you drain and firm up your body”.
Did you go to far on that chocolate box ? Well she cannot testify....
Or maybe is it because of that delicious Yule log? She can't either...
- And for some lasts, this is a real business model.
LIES FROM COMPANIES
Detox diets and foodstuff are usually promoted by companies that like to use “miracle”, well, this might be in their compulsory semantic field when they need to describe their product. If you look for scientific research on good effect of Detox, well good luck, you won’t find a lot of stuff. The problem is that their studies are usually shaky…
Of course some foodstuff are ful of nutrients and that we would recommand their consumption, the idea is that beyond that notion of healthy food, they mislead on the way of consumming a certain product for a defined period.
WHAT IS THE OPINION OF RESEARCHERS?
Some studies tend to show that molecules coming from broccoli, fennel or lemon for example, can have positive effects on liver and kidney functions, et by extension on the metabolism itself. On the face of it, this is interesting as it would give those companies the legitimacy to sell their product without any doubts.
The main problem is that, those studies, have been carried out on mouse, and not on humans… neither with foodstuff but only molecular substance. It just tsarts from this food processing in an ultra-concentrated molecule. In order to reach (in proportion) the same quantity, you should eat tremendous amounts of it.
A. V. Klein & Al (2015) explained that :
“Detox diets are popular dieting strategies that claim to facilitate toxin elimination and weight loss, thereby promoting health and well-being. The present review examines whether detox diets are necessary, what they involve, whether they are effective and whether they present any dangers. Although the detox industry is booming, there is very little clinical evidence to support the use of these diets. A handful of clinical studies have shown that commercial detox diets enhance liver detoxification and eliminate persistent organic pollutants from the body, although these studies are hampered by flawed methodologies and small sample sizes. There is preliminary evidence to suggest that certain foods such as coriander, nori and olestra have detoxification properties, although the majority of these studies have been performed in animals. To the best of our knowledge, no randomised controlled trials have been conducted to assess the effectiveness of commercial detox diets in humans. This is an area that deserves attention so that consumers can be informed of the potential benefits and risks of detox programmes.”
USE GOOD JUDGMENT AND COMMON SENSE
Studies tend to show that those specific diets didn’t shown any efficiency n desintoxication for human kind. This is another time a tricky use of marketing and communications supports in order to generate sales to these companies.
WE are the product, WE loose money, and THEY get paid.
Last but not least, is it what we eat during holidays that matters, or is it what we eat all year long ?
I think that the question "is vite répondue".
