Well, this is a bit more complicated than that.
Indeed, this is true that one person that quit smoking can gain weight during the following weeks. According to some facts, a cigarette would burn about 10kcal. Saying that the more you smoke cigarettes the more calories you burn would be half-true since 1) there are also metabolic adaptation 2) that might not be the best way to think about health when we deal with weight loss. Therefore, it can be a great idea:
Continue smoking cigarettes
--> Die earlier
--> Get your body rotten
--> Lose weight and fat
The only bad side is that you will be dead to see those results....

In fact, starting again the cigarette doesn’t prevent you from gaining weight and quiting smoking doesn't prevent wieght loss.
As we have seen before in a few articles, the idea is to manage the caloric gain/expenditure. We won't focus on the calorie burnt by the cigarette, but more on how you can manage to deal with the replacement of such habit and how you can adapt you nutrition to it.
Indeed, quitting smoking can induce an increase of the desire to eat, and to devour the first snack you see on your day. Replacing such habit is difficult as it usually have been implemented for years.
TIPS:
- find another activity that you like, by replaceming smoking by a healthy and pleasing habit, you will as well generate dopamine, or any activity that you have always wanted to practice.
- look for support inside your relatives circle, et go away from the one who encourage you to smoke.... Quitting smoking is harder especially when during your break you socialize with pople that pursue smoking...
- you can count your calories and decrease a bit your caloric intake. If you can manage it, it will be alright. Beyond Fitness would recommend you to decrease the amount by this way:
if you weight 70kg, you should take away "2*70 "= "140"kcal per day. It stands as a small deficit.
By the way for your relatives, it might be a good idea to quit smoking as Nicotin cravings generate moodiness, drowsiness and tense feelings which are directly related with some negative vibes towards then :)
As a conclusion, the study from J T Wack and J Rodin (1982) is perfect: "smokers weigh less because they consume less and they gain weight upon stopping smoking as a consequence of consuming more. Evidence regarding the effects of cigarette smoking and nicotine upon the behavioral, sensory and metabolic components of the processes of caloric regulation and nutrition is reviewed in order to suggest mechanisms by which smoking may affect weight."
Gaining weight and stoping smoking seems related because of the habits and behaviour changes that occur during such period.
