Uncertainty

The only thing that can guarantee is that things will continue to remain uncertain.

We are all facing uncertain situations, especially at the moment regarding the sanitary situation that impacts the major part of people of earth. This major event that might lead us to some investigation towards uncertainty.

According to the Cambridge dictionary, uncertainty, is by definition, "a situation in which something is not known, or something that is not known or certain". It also stands for the "feeling of not being sure what will happen in the future".

In fact, on a daily basis, we are commonly implied into uncertain situations whether in our jobs or in our private lives. Crisis, changing political contexts, social events… are situations that imply a more or less high degree of uncertainty. And we ask ourselves a huge amount of questions about our future: will I succeed by launching a new company? Can I get married with this person? Will I go through the disease?.......

Therefore, we can prepare ourselves to avoid panic. The more you get prepared, the better you will be able to face the problems that you encounter. But in some ways, this is only true to a certain point…

As said before, we can find ways to avoid a certain level of uncertainty:

- The first thing is to do research ! In order to be able to apprehend and to anticipate as much as we can, one key element is to stay informed and to gather information from different sources;

- The second thing is to find the balance between doing and overdoing. The idea is to take effective action. For example, when you know that lock down will happen, don’t rush to buy you toilet paper rolls? You don’t need that amount of paper rolls (except if you want to make a great statue) and you will lead to shortage…;

- The third thing is to stay calm as you did know that you did what you could. It will avoid stressful mindset, as well as bad decision making;

- Last but not least, adjusting. This is the moment to modify the “initial plan” according to new information coming out.

Uncertainty leads to stress. Moreover, researches conducted on psychological stress have shown that it can lead to hypertension issues. This is what highlighted Alexey V Ushakov & All (2016) pointing out that. For example, the lifestyle, the workplace or the homeplace can be situations generating high levels of stress.

“A butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil can cause a rainstorm in Rome”.

Tiny things can have big impacts. Even the smallest and insignificant event, action can lead to massive changes...

Maslow's theory

Caspar Berry (a business speaker) explains that it is related with Maslow's hierarchy of needs. At the bottom of the pyramid, we find the core needs such as safety, security. They are the basic and most valued needs. They are the foundations. However, when we deal with uncertainty we usually face the loss of such notions, and so the lack of control over our lives. This is a problem since we loose what we, literally crave for.

The idea is to plan the unplannable. What I mean is that we can reduce the amount of uncertain evens that happens to us. In the same way, we can embrace uncertainty and risks.

In fact, if you see crisis in the long run, and if you look at them from an historical point of view, you just know that we will go through it, it took time, but we moved ahead.

Last but not least, by knowing that sometimes just can do anything about the situation, keeping calm and taking actions over the events, can help to feel more comfortable.

Move ahead, do things, and work for it: uncertainty will be lowered.
